Increasing Conversion with International Banners

Best Practice Guide to IRP Banners by Profit Path

Increasing Conversion with International Banners

IRP is natively global and Banners allows country targeted messaging to maximise conversion on every international storefront.

IRP supports 468 banner variations across mobile and desktop storefronts with 19 banner locations per storefront.  Banners should not be treated as graphic decoration - they are trading signals designed to build trust, remove objections and nudge customers to Convert.

Banners should be set up in conjunction with experts. A well-designed banner strategy is methodically constructed, measured using IRP Split Tests, and then largely left alone - especially for international messaging.

How Conversion Rate Impacts Revenue

eCommerce numbers are driven by a simple maths equation:

Sessions × Conversion Rate × Average Order Value = Sales

Improving conversion rate should always be done FIRST to increase sales & profits without requiring additional traffic spend. E.g.,

  • Annual Sales: £1,000,000
  • Conversion Rate: 2.0%
  •  👉 Strategic banners increases conversion by +10% to 2.2%
  • Then Annual Sales are now £1,100,000
  • That's an additional £100,000 in revenue

Banners are key to conversion. International conversion rates can go up hundreds of percent if done correctly, so the above revenue increase is conservative.

Over 80% of Sessions Never See the Homepage

One of the big misconceptions in eCommerce is that a customer starts their journey on a website homepage. In reality, for most merchants, over 80% of visitors arrive directly on listing or product pages.

This means most customers NEVER see homepage promotions or hero banners in their customer journey. They DO see the Banners that show on every page - and these are the banners that prove critical. Therefore  the most critical are the Roof and Heading Banners.

These Two Critical Banners Appear on All Pages

The Roof and Header Banners are the most important banners because they appear consistently throughout the customer journey on every page.

These banners should be localised for each country's market, acknowledging the country and overcoming objections, such as trust, delivery, returns, duties and shipping.

These two banners locations are critical whereas the other 17 banner locations play a supporting nudge role.

The Roof Banner

The Roof Banner appears on every page, making it one of the most important tools for building broad trust and localising the customer experience. Think of it as your website's headline.

For your domestic market it can be used for Merchandising and can be updated over time for your market. However for international markets - use the Roof Banner to communicate a strong confidence-building message, particularly around shipping AND avoid short-term promotions.

The key visual cue is to show the flag and to say “We Ship to France 🇫🇷” in a clever empathic way.  Set this up ONCE and leave it. International markets are different to domestic markets and rarely need merchandising.

The Heading Banner

Heading Banners should be localised for EACH market and focused on answering key objections from the moment a customer arrives.

Visitors begin to form an impression sub second, so use this space MUST communicate buying signals, and NOT short-term promotions.

  • Delivery reassurance – Fast Delivery or Fast Deliver to “Country” “Flag”
  • Social proof & Trust Signals– Rated Excellent by X Customers, Official Seller
  • Market authority – The World's No.1 Supplier (to France)

Use the Heading Banner to answer the customer's basic first questions: Can I trust you? Yes. Can you deliver it to me? Yes. Should I trust buying from you? Yes.

This alone eliminates 80% of objections in almost all markets and again takes deep empathy and thought over every word.

International Sales Up 1,197% with International Banners

Agency Profit Path used IRP Split Tests in 10 international markets to measure the revenue impact of localisation. They added a country flag alongside the shipping message in the Heading Banner.

Many markets jumped hundreds of percent. The standout result was Switzerland, where adding an animated Swiss flag increased:

  • Conversion Rate: 0.29% → 1.31%
  • Up 352% increase by changing Heading Banner
  • Swiss sales were up: +1,197.22%

Nothing else changed!  No pricing, products or additional marketing spend. The result shows how localised visual connection to the country market radically increases customer confidence and international conversion.

Why Do Localised Banners Have Such an Impact?

Banners overcome objections. Customers look for signals that a retailer sells into their market. A country flag alongside a localised shipping message on a Heading or Roof Banner answers objections out of the gate.

Make sure these Banners are optimised for Mobile and Desktop.  A small localisation change has a big impact on conversion, revenue and ROI. Conversion optimisation is rarely about big changes - small acknowledgement of their basic market needs make a big commercial difference.

Other High Impact Banner Locations

The Roof and Heading Banners are by far the most important. Other IRP banner locations can influence customers at key nudge points.

Add to Basket Banner

Location: Directly beneath the Buy Button.

This is a key moment to remove hesitation. Use the banner for reassurance rather than promotion, such as:

  • Local delivery and carrier information
  • Social proof and customer ratings
  • Returns information
  • Payment options
  • Authorised seller

Nudge: Remove objections and give customers confidence to add to basket.

Models Page Above Scrollers:

Location: Between the product description and recommended products.

Customers have finished reading about the product and are naturally looking for additional information.

This banner is ideal for linking to:

  • Returns Information
  • Buying guides
  • Warranty information
  • FAQs and Expert Advice

Nudge: Educate customers and encourage engagement rather than leave the page.

Basket Page Banners:

Location: Below the basket

The Basket Banner is to nudge them to checkout.

Effective messaging includes:

  • Country specific shipping messaging - Free delivery thresholds
  • Returns policy
  • Secure payment reassurance
  • Social Proofing - Rated Excellent by our customers

Nudge: Reinforce confidence, increase average order value and reduce basket abandonment.

Conclusion

Banner Messaging is complex to do correctly and IRP is looking into Automation of banner content via DeepAgent.

Banners should be treated as trading signals, not decoration. They should be carefully planned, localised and targeted at key decision points. Results show that empathetic banners have a major commercial impact and are critical in international markets.

The best approach is to work with an experienced Agency with deep CRO knowledge, to configure your banners strategically, with empathy, and then test.
