404 Error Handler

You can find this section under Server Management > 404 Error Handler in the IRP Admin left navigation menu.

You use this section to create 404 "Not Found" error message content. The error message is what a customer sees when they follow a broken link on your website or type a URL into their browser for a page that no longer exists. Typically you would include these elements in your message:

  • A ‘Not Found’ message;
  • A polite apology;
  • A brief possible explanation of why the customer cannot find the page (for example because it has moved);
  • Advice about what they should do (for example, point them to your navigation or home page to find what they are looking for).

The main 404 Error Handler page (404Handler.aspx) contains to tabs for writing your error page content for either your desktop site or your mobile site:

At the top-right of the page you can see the main switch (coloured green) for enabling or disabling the 404 Error Handler. (This automatically enables or disables the Application Setting called 'Enable 404 Handler' (in the grouping called 'Technical Settings').)

Note that you can also enable an Application Setting called 'Enable 404 Redirect For Inactive Elements' - when enabled, customers will be redirected to the 404.aspx page whenever they visit a Model, Brand or Category that is now inactive on the website. Also see the Inactive Elements help topic for more information.

For more details, refer to the How To Add 404 Error Handler Content article in this section.
